Should a kitchen splashback be toughened?
Toughened glass is often selected above worktops because it is more resistant to stress and temperature changes. Every hole, cut-out and edge treatment is completed before toughening; a socket cannot simply be moved or a pane trimmed afterwards. Selection near a hob must account for the appliance instructions, required distances and ventilation conditions.
Do not rest hot cookware directly against the splashback or treat the glass as a substitute for the hob manufacturer’s requirements. For a gas installation, the design and safe distance from burners must be checked.
How to survey a glass splashback
- Measure wall width and height at several points.
- Mark the underside of wall units and the worktop, checking their level.
- Record the exact position of sockets, switches, pipes and other obstacles.
- Identify internal and external corners and any pane joints.
- Add photographs of the entire kitchen and close-ups of unusual details.
- State the hob or cooker model and the existing wall finish.
A production survey is best completed after the cabinets and worktop have been installed and final levels are known. Colour, print and Optiwhite glass
Standard clear glass may have a slight green tint, particularly noticeable with whites and pale colours. Low-iron glass such as Optiwhite reduces this effect and can reproduce whites and light artwork more faithfully. Compare samples where possible, because glass thickness, lighting and substrate colour also affect the result.
For printed glass, supply a high-resolution file and agree the crop on a visual proof. Important parts of an image should not fall behind socket cut-outs, pane joints, the extractor or tall equipment on the worktop.
Installation and care
The substrate should be stable, even and prepared for the chosen installation method. Adhesives, sealants and channels must be compatible with the glass and its coating. On painted glass, unsuitable installation products may affect the decorative layer, so use solutions recommended for the product.
Routine cleaning normally needs only a soft cloth and a mild glass cleaner. Avoid abrasives, sharp scrapers and aggressive products that may damage the coating, joints or edge seals.
What affects the price of a glass splashback?
There is no single reliable price per metre for every splashback. A quotation depends on:
- glass type, thickness and variant;
- toughening, colour, artwork or an additional coating;
- the number, dimensions and shapes of the panes;
- socket holes, cut-outs and edge processing;
- survey, transport, access and installation;
- substrate preparation and an unusual work sequence.
Photographs and approximate dimensions are sufficient for an initial proposal. The final quotation relates to the selected material, colour or print and verified dimensions.
