Waterjet cutting – materials, file and quotation

Waterjet cutting uses water at very high pressure, together with abrasive for harder materials, to cut shapes without the heat-affected zone typical of thermal processes. It can be used for components made from metal, stone, ceramics, glass and many other materials. The result and price depend on the material, thickness, part geometry, file quality and required finish.

How does Waterjet cutting work?

Water is pressurised and directed through a small orifice to create a concentrated jet. Water alone may be used for soft materials, while abrasive is added for harder ones. The head follows a programmed path to make straight lines, curves, holes and complex contours.

The absence of local heating is useful for heat-sensitive materials or when changes along the cut edge are undesirable. It does not mean every edge is immediately suitable as a decorative finish. Cut quality is selected for the component’s function, and some projects need subsequent processing.

This list is indicative. A specific material should be confirmed from a sample, its documentation and the quality requirements. Brittle, delaminating or unknown materials may need a cutting trial.

ALHEN machine parameters

According to ALHEN’s currently published information, the system operates at about 6,000 bar, has a working area of approximately 3,010 × 1,540 mm and a declared accuracy of up to 0.1 mm. Materials up to approximately 100 mm thick may be cut. These are machine parameters, not a guarantee for every part: achievable accuracy and maximum thickness depend on the material, geometry, edge quality and agreed cutting standard. Feasibility is confirmed for each project before an order.

How should a Waterjet cutting file be prepared?

  1. Supply geometry at 1:1 scale and state the unit, preferably millimetres.
  2. Remove duplicate lines, open contours and accidental points that could alter the toolpath.
  3. Separate parts that require different materials, thicknesses or cutting qualities.
  4. Add a control drawing with key dimensions, quantities and the visible face.
  5. State tolerances only where they are functionally required.
  6. Describe the material: type, grade, thickness, format and who supplies it.

Clear vector or CAD files are normally the most useful, but confirm the accepted format before submission. A photograph, unscaled scan or screenshot is generally insufficient for a production toolpath. If only a physical pattern exists, ask whether the geometry can be recreated.

What affects edge quality?

Important factors include head speed, material type and thickness, jet diameter, secure holding and the required appearance. Faster cutting may suit a blank that will be processed later; slower cutting may be chosen when the cut surface matters more. Corners, small holes and thin bridges are constrained by the jet size and the behaviour of the material.

State which edges will remain visible and whether the part will later be welded, painted, ground or installed without additional processing.

What should be supplied for a quotation?

  • the geometry file and a PDF preview or control drawing;
  • material type, grade and thickness;
  • sheet or slab dimensions and who supplies it;
  • the quantity of each part;
  • required tolerances and edge quality;
  • the visible face, pattern direction or grain;
  • the deadline and collection or delivery method.

Cost is affected by machine time, path length and complexity, the number of piercings, material thickness and hardness, sheet utilisation, data preparation and any additional processing. Pricing therefore relates to a specific file and scope.

Frequently asked questions

Does Waterjet cutting heat the material?

The process does not create the heat-affected zone typical of thermal cutting. The material still needs to be assessed for contact with water and the action of the jet.

Can a part be quoted from a photograph?

A photograph helps explain the application, but accurate pricing needs dimensions, material, quantity and preferably a geometry file.

Can ALHEN cut customer-supplied material?

Working with supplied material requires agreement on its type, format, condition and available spare quantity. A trial or spare piece may be advisable for unusual material.

How to choose made-to-measure glass: types, uses and safer decisions

Short answer: made-to-measure glass should be selected for the element’s function, support method, fittings, impact risk and conditions of use. The pane dimensions alone are not enough. Before requesting a quotation, prepare a sketch, photographs, approximate dimensions and a description of the application. Before production, confirm every hole, cut-out, edge and installation clearance.

Start with the application, then choose the glass

The same pane will not be the right solution for a shelf, kitchen splashback, door, shower enclosure and balustrade. Begin with a few practical questions:

  • could a person strike or fall against the glass;
  • does the element carry a load or provide fall protection;
  • will it be exposed to water, elevated temperatures or frequent temperature changes;
  • how will it be supported or fixed;
  • are holes, cut-outs, hinges, handles or other fittings required;
  • will the edges be visible and accessible during everyday use;
  • which regulations, project requirements or system documentation apply to the element.

Early dimensions can support an indicative quotation. They should not automatically become production dimensions for a permanently installed element.

Toughened, laminated and patterned glass – what is the difference?

Tempered Glass

Toughening changes the stress distribution in glass and increases its mechanical strength and resistance to temperature differences compared with the starting glass. Cutting, holes, cut-outs and edge processing must all be planned before toughening. A finished toughened pane should not subsequently be cut, drilled or ground.

The word “toughened” alone does not establish whether the glass is suitable for a particular use. Its dimensions, thickness, shape, edges, fixing method, loads and project requirements also matter.

Laminated glass

Laminated glass consists of at least two panes joined by an interlayer. If the glass breaks, this layer helps retain fragments. The level of protection depends on the complete laminate composition, not only the material name.

Laminated and toughened glass are not interchangeable. Some solutions combine both types of processing, but their construction must be selected for the function, fixing system and project requirements.

Patterned, matt, tinted and painted glass

These options are selected mainly for the desired level of privacy, light transmission, colour and interior character. View a sample under the intended lighting and beside the wall, furniture and fitting colours. A pattern or colour may appear different depending on the light direction and background.

A decorative finish does not replace a safety assessment. If an element is in an impact zone, beside a circulation route or performs a protective function, its complete specification must be confirmed separately.

Plan processing and fittings before production

State which edges will remain visible and mark every hole, cut-out and corner. If the pane must work with a hinge, handle or fixing system, provide the manufacturer and model or attach the technical drawing.

Hole positions should not be estimated by eye. A small discrepancy can prevent correct installation, and changing a finished toughened pane is not a workable correction.

What should you prepare for a made-to-measure glass quotation?

Prepare:

  1. the application and quantity;
  2. width and height in millimetres, with the top edge identified;
  3. a simple sketch showing holes, cut-outs, corners and reference points;
  4. a photograph of the full wall, recess or installation area;
  5. the support method, fittings and opening direction, where relevant;
  6. which edges will remain visible;
  7. the intended appearance: clear, matt, tinted, painted or patterned glass;
  8. whether collection, transport, survey or installation is required.

If walls or a recess are not perfectly parallel, measure them in several places. For an irregular shape, add diagonals and unambiguous reference points. Do not guess installation clearances; they should follow from the selected solution.

When is a project consultation required?

Balustrades, large doors and partitions, overhead elements, load-bearing glass and panes working with a specific fitting system all need particular verification. In these cases, selection should not rely on a sample thickness found online.
